Ka Hikitia in Action

Ka Hikitia in Action showcases the critical role parents, whānau and communities play in helping their children to learn. It illustrates that Māori educational success can be achieved when communities, iwi, schools, early learning centres, or the Ministry work in collaboration – mahi tahi.
If you are interested in teaching second language learning of three Asian languages you now have access to a $10 million contestable fund to support you. The three languages to be funded are Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean. To be considered for funding, you need to register your interest by 20 November, 2014. If the school is considered eligible, you will be invited to submit a proposal by late February next year.

A new school-based programme is in the process of being set up here by Victoria University's Accent Learning, which trains educators. The KiVa programme started in Finland, and has since been adapted for schools in the Netherlands, Wales, Italy, Estonia and Belgium - where there have been big reductions in the number of bullying incidents. One of the KiVA developers Professor Christina Salmivalli is in Wellington to train educators who to use and implement the anti bullying programme.
Ten secondary school students are being awarded nearly $40,000 each to study at the University of Waikato.
